Discover Taqueria La Carreta

If you’re craving real-deal Mexican street food in Franklin Park, Taqueria La Carreta is the kind of spot you don’t just visit once. You circle back. Tucked inside the strip at 9970 Grand Ave #2550, Franklin Park, IL 60131, this casual diner-style taqueria delivers bold flavors, generous portions, and the kind of warm service that makes you feel like a regular, even on your first stop.

The first time I walked in, the aroma hit immediately-grilled carne asada, warm tortillas, and slow-simmered beans. I ordered the steak tacos and a horchata, figuring that tacos are the true test of any Mexican kitchen. The meat was tender with crispy edges, seasoned simply but perfectly, topped with fresh cilantro and onion. No overload of extras, just balance. That simplicity reflects a cooking method rooted in tradition: high-heat grilling, fresh garnishes, and tortillas warmed right before serving. It’s a small detail, but it changes everything in texture and taste.

The menu covers all the staples you’d expect-tacos, burritos, tortas, quesadillas, enchiladas-but it also leans into hearty plates like carne asada dinners and chilaquiles. On a second visit, I tried the al pastor burrito. The pork was marinated with achiote and pineapple, giving it that sweet-smoky depth that defines authentic pastor. According to the National Restaurant Association, diners increasingly look for authenticity and regional flavors when choosing restaurants. That trend makes sense here because nothing feels watered down or overly Americanized. The spices are confident. The salsa has real heat. The flavors linger.

What stands out is consistency. I’ve visited during lunch rush and slower mid-afternoon hours, and the quality stayed steady. That says a lot about kitchen management and ingredient sourcing. Fresh produce, properly stored proteins, and made-to-order preparation are standard practices in well-run kitchens. You can see it in action-the grill sizzling nonstop, staff assembling plates quickly but carefully. It’s efficient without feeling rushed.

The location itself is practical and easy to access. Franklin Park is known for its mix of residential neighborhoods and industrial hubs, so you’ll find everyone from local families to construction crews stopping by. The dining area is clean and straightforward-no frills, just tables, bright lighting, and a steady flow of regulars picking up takeout. Reviews often mention the friendly staff, and that matches my experience. Questions about the menu are answered patiently, and special requests aren’t treated like a burden.

One thing worth noting is portion size. Plates are generous, especially the combination dinners that come with rice and beans. If you’re sharing or planning leftovers, you’re covered. At the same time, lighter options like taco plates or tortas keep things flexible. It’s easy to customize your meal, whether you’re avoiding dairy or just prefer extra salsa verde.

From a food safety and quality perspective, transparency matters. While I don’t have access to back-of-house inspection records, Illinois restaurants must follow strict health department regulations. Clean tables, visible glove use, and organized prep areas add a layer of trust for customers paying attention to those details. That reliability is part of why neighborhood taquerias like this thrive-they build loyalty through everyday consistency rather than flashy marketing.

There are plenty of Mexican restaurants across the Chicago suburbs, but Taqueria La Carreta earns its place by sticking to fundamentals: fresh ingredients, traditional preparation, and straightforward service. It’s not trying to reinvent tacos. Instead, it focuses on doing them right. If you’re exploring dining options in Franklin Park or just searching for solid Mexican food near Grand Avenue, this spot delivers flavor, value, and the comforting familiarity of a neighborhood favorite.

  • This is a lovely kiche spot for good family Mexican. I especially love the Gorditas, the best I've had. The food is always been great quality and you can't beat the price. It's clean, and for anyone in the area, it is fun to see how they worked the place from an old fashioned ice cream shop. The service is great, watched and accommodate gluten free easily, and are just Kind and Nice. Really a great local small business to support.
